How To Write A Thesis Statement For A Research Paper: Tips And Samples

When writing academic papers, there are various different styles and formats that you may use. For example, a research paper can be very different to a simple three paragraph essay. In fact, a three paragraph essay will generally require you to write a very short amount of text, and will be based on an introduction, a body section, and a conclusion. On the other hand, a research paper may require considerably more text and will be made up of a far larger number of different sections.

One particular section that you may be required to write when producing a research paper is a thesis statement. Essentially, a thesis statement will give the reader a good understanding of your work before they proceed to read the rest of your paper. The following gives some ideas of what to do when writing this particular section.

Where to include the thesis statement?

Your statement should be included towards the beginning of your paper. In fact, it will be one of the very first things that readers will see, and will outline what it is that they should expect to read. Therefore, you do not want to leave it too late before including your statement, as it should be used to not only inform the reader of what to expect, but also encourage them to continue reading.

What to include in your statement

Essentially, your statement will be a brief summary of the rest of your paper. As a result, you will need to largely condense much of the other information in the paper into a relatively short section. Of course, you can’t include details of everything; therefore, you need to choose the most relevant parts.

You should inform the reader about the title and topic that you will be writing about. Your title will be relatively short and, therefore, it will only provide the reader with a general idea about what your paper will be discussing. Therefore, your statement should go into more detail, so that the reader has a better understanding of what your title refers to. In fact, you may wish to give a bit of background information relating to the overall topic that you’re title is related to, as well as some further details about the investigations and research that you will be doing. Furthermore, you should include some details about any research methods that you will be using, and what results you expect to find.
